About colour…

It’s probably not news that you can make a colour wheel with the three primaries - Red, Yellow and Blue.

My favourite colour wheel starts with a cool Yellow (maybe Hansa Yellow Light), a cool Blue (I like Phthalo Blue) and a cool Red (I can't paint without Quinacridone Magenta!). Think of printer ink colours and you're on track!

Painting your own colour wheel is an excellent exercise to do if you're feeling stuck or uninspired... or just want to feel like an artist! I freestyle it, starting with a triangle for the three primaries, then the Secondaries (Orange, Green, Purple) are on the sides of the triangle and the Tertiaries between them.

Fun fact, you always name a Tertiary colour with the Primary colour first. So it's 'Yellow Orange' or 'Red Orange'... 'Blue Green' or 'Yellow Green'... not the other way around.

My favourite way to learn colour theory though, is by ACTUALLY PAINTING.

What’s Accidental Learning

In this month's featured Paint Along, ‘Hummingbirds’, we learn about drawing, mixing neutrals and brush skills WHILE we're doing the painting. I call it 'Accidental Learning' and it's a lovely surprise at the end.

Got any questions about colour? I'd be happy to help.
